Salary:                   $80,000-$100,000 Based on experience

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The location can be remote or in an ABC office located in either Washington, D.C. or The Plains, Virginia.

American Bird Conservancy seeks to advance bird and habitat conservation by influencing the 2023 Farm Bill legislation and associated regulations, and by participating in Farm Bill conservation programs and projects.


Advocacy and Government Relations. The Director serves as chief advocate and policymaker for ABC’s Farm Bill campaign and Department of Agriculture programs and will represent the organization in meetings with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Congress.

Policy Development. The Director will be responsible for developing a Farm Bill Action Plan for Birds. The position requires an understanding of Farm Bill legislation, particularly conservation programs benefitting birds or habitats.  The Director will work with experts to develop specific bird conservation recommendations for the Farm Bill.


Partnership Building. Coordinating with Farm Bill coalitions and rallying ABC partner organizations in support of campaign goals is another key aspect of the Director’s role. 


Communications. ABC is the voice for birds in the habitat conservation and restoration debate. We seek a strong communicator to work closely with our Communications team on news statements, opinion editorials, citizen alerts, and social media content in support of campaign goals.


*Program Development and Project Administration: Coordinates with ABC Program staff to understand potential opportunities to participate in and implement Farm Bill and Department of Agricultural programs. Contribute to proposal and budget development, donor reporting, grant and contract review for organizational adherence to required federal and other donor requirements, tracking and contract reporting, match requirements, and serve as a liaison with the Conservation, Finance and Operations teams.


Position Requirements:

  • At least five years of experience in policy, including Farm Bill experience and familiarity with Farm Bill conservation programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Attention to deadlines and detail-oriented, particularly with regard to donor agreements, contracts and other related legal documents.
  • Team player, and able to work independently.
  • Strong MS Office skills, including demonstrated experience working with databases.
  • Patience and perseverance in understanding and explaining issues.
  • US work authorization is required for all US opportunities. ABC cannot offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.
  • Ability to travel frequently to Washington, D.C.
