Introduction:


The Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture (LMVJV) partnership is seeking a full time, dynamic conservationist with the skills and experience to serve as the LMVJV Avian Ecologist and make significant contributions to daily operations. The Avian Ecologist will work within the LMVJV partnership, and will be hired by American Bird Conservancy with guidance on activities from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s LMVJV Office. The LMVJV partnership consists of private, state, and federal conservation agencies and organizations that by virtue of legislated authority or organizational mission assume responsibility for the implementation of national and international bird conservation plans within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) and West Gulf Coastal Plain/Ouachitas (WGCPO) Bird Conservation Regions. In turn, the LMVJV Office is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the work of that partnership on all aspects of bird conservation planning, implementation, monitoring, research, and evaluation. The Avian Ecologist will focus on the biological underpinning of the conservation partnership’s collective efforts. The Avian Ecologist will coordinate and facilitate the development and progressive refinement of a strong scientific foundation for bird conservation within the LMV region, with primary emphasis on landbirds and landbird habitat.



Primary Duties:


The major duties of the position fall within eight broad areas.


  • Biological Planning:  Coordinate and facilitate the science-based planning necessary to link on-the-ground habitat objectives of Joint Venture partners to the population goals and objectives of the Partners in Flight Landbird Conservation Plan. Coordinate the activities of multiple partners in developing – through transparent, replicable processes and procedures – goals and objectives that reflect measurable biological outcomes linked across multiple spatial scales. 


  • Conservation Design:  Coordinate the activities of multiple partners in integrating biological goals and objectives for landbirds in a spatially explicit manner.


  • Conservation Delivery:  Coordinate the activities of multiple partners in developing and revising decision support tools that allow on-the-ground conservation actions with explicit consideration of the environmental sensitivity of the landscape and broader scale biological outcomes.


  • Decision-based Monitoring and Evaluation:  Working through technical working groups and individual conservation partners, develop goals, objectives, protocols, and procedures for monitoring habitat change and population response at multiple spatial scales that are linked to formal decision-making processes.


  • Assumption-driven Research:  Working with and through scientists in other agencies and organizations, identify research needs and facilitate projects that address the assumptions and uncertainties associated with the Joint Venture’s biological planning and that lead to progressive refinement of its biological goals and objectives.


  • Partnership Development and Support:  Bolster and maintain an effective partnership infrastructure that includes standing and ad hoc working groups focused on developing and progressively refining the scientific foundation of the conservation actions of Joint Venture partners, especially as related to landbirds.


  • National and International Coordination: Represent the Joint Venture Office and Joint Venture partnership in broader science arenas associated with the Partners in Flight National Science Committee, and other relevant efforts.


  • Collaboration and Coordination: Responsible for ongoing productive interaction with LMVJV staff and key partners in addressing high priority science needs.  While the primary responsibilities are with landbird and landbird habitat science, the Avian Ecologist will be expected to provide insight, input, and/or assistance to tasks associated with science related to other bird guilds, in coordination with the Senior Science Coordinator, in areas consistent with technical expertise.


Position Requirements:


  • Master’s degree or PhD in bird conservation, biology, ecology or related field.
  • Moderate travel required throughout the year (15-20%+ post COVID).
  • Experience in applying a well-rounded background in bird and habitat management with knowledge of computer technologies in finding the most appropriate approaches to determining amount, configuration and location of habitat to meet stated bird population and habitat goals for the LMVJV.
  • Experience in relaying the results of biological planning and supporting their use.
  • Experience with development and implementation of natural resources projects, including identification of objectives, establishment of implementation schedules and evaluation of project accomplishments.
  • Experience working with a diversity of partners, including government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in working with a wide variety of people and partner institutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of the LMVJV region’s birds, habitats, and ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of the aims and methods of research on bird populations and habitats.
  • Technical proficiency in writing and reviewing bird conservation plans, scientific research, and grants.
  • Knowledge and experience of a professional nature, of the theory, principles and methods of wildlife and/or conservation biology and their application to bird habitat management and conservation.
  • Ability to organize, analyze and interpret biological planning and assessment projects, tasks and studies that involve complex relationships between species and their habitats and ecological processes and functions operating at multiple spatial scales (local, regional, and landscape).
  • Demonstrated skill in the development of bird population and habitat relationship models and decision support tools, and the application of model-based approaches to assessing, predicting or monitoring the ability of landscapes to support and sustain wildlife populations. Familiarity with analysis of large-scale datasets (e.g., Breeding Bird Survey, eBird) is desirable.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience with GIS and its role, utility and application in characterizing, analyzing and assessing ecological processes, systems and conditions. Will work closely with the LMVJV GIS Applications Specialist.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field techniques and procedures in monitoring and assessing wildlife population status and habitat conditions.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Background screening required.
